"I figured out a talent. I can write much better than I thought I could.
We learned to have thoughts on stage, to actually feel what you're doing.

Literature at Play is Making Books Sing’s signature education program. To date, our staff of gifted theatre artists has guided over 40,000 children in writing and performing 1,600 plays and musicals!
The children’s creative journey starts with reading the book adapted by Making Books Sing and ends with their own creation of plays and musicals, all based on related books. Along the way, they learn to be active listeners and observers as audience members and students. They learn to be actors, directors, playwrights, composers and lyricists. They learn to be better readers with deeper understandings of character, plot, theme and setting. They learn to infer, transfer and confer. What does the author not tell you? How do you take what you know about the genre of fiction and apply it to the genre of plays? How do we negotiate our ideas in small groups? Children learn that books and theatre (and school) can be wonderful fun.
We often work with children who need alternative strategies for developing language and literacy. English language learners, special needs children and kids who are not quite reaching their potential as readers and writers. Yet, children of all learning abilities and needs thrive, since our practice builds on every child’s unique imagination.
