In 2009, Making Books Sing piloted It Starts with a Story, a new curriculum that builds on the idea of “interpretation.” Musical theatre brings together a wide range of artists – actors, designers, dancers, choreographers, actors, musicians and more.  For Making Books Sing’s professional productions, each of these artists are asked to interpret text – the adapted work of literature, script, lyrics and research materials. Ultimately, the artists marry their different interpretations into one compelling story.

In this distinctive school program, elementary and middle school students work with an actor, playwright, dancer and composer to explore a text through their disciplines. Children gain insight into the creative process of the four artists and the unique attributes of their artforms. They learn how artists find inspiration in the world around them and apply it to their craft.
