Sky Boys
Directed by Brad Malow
Music Direction by Tim Rosser
World Premiere Tour February - March, 2011
It's 1930 and the Great Depression has hit New York City hard, but down the street, 600 men are building the tallest skyscraper in the world—The Empire State Building. This new, modern building is an exciting symbol of hope and progress for many New Yorkers, and captures 15-year-old Mickey’s imagination. When Mickey’s father must leave New York City to look for work, Mickey hides in the building and is discovered by one of the water boys, really a Native American girl in disguise.
Despite his fear of heights, Mickey accepts a job with Lewis Hine, the building's photographer. He is in awe of the Mohawk ironworkers who “walk the steel” and frame the building. Mickey’s new friends teach him about their rich culture, and how to overcome his fears. When you believe in yourself, the sky’s the limit to what you can accomplish.
