Based on the book of the same name by award-winning children’s author Patricia Polacco, The Butterfly tells the story of a friendship between two 12-year-old girls, the Catholic Monique and the Jewish Sevrine, during the Nazi occupation of France. The two girls meet when Monique discovers that her mother, a member of the French resistance, is hiding Sevrine in their attic. Monique and Sevrine’s friendship grows as the war rages on, but when an informant suspects that Monique’s mother is sheltering Jews, Monique is called upon to help lead her friend to safety.

Praise for Making Books Sing’s 2008 Production of The Butterfly:

“A Holocaust drama that moves and inspires but does not lead inexorably toward heartbreak”-The New York Times

“The stage adaptation of “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett is, it is probably safe to say, the only play about the Holocaust that most school children know. But that may be about to change, thanks to Making Books Sing.” -New York Jewish Week
