    Barbara Zinn Krieger founded Making Books Sing during her 22-year tenure as Executive Director and Founder of New York’s Tony Award-winning Vineyard Theatre. Krieger has been writing children’s operas and musicals for more than 15 years. Credits include book and lyrics for The Merry Muldoons (The Vineyard Theatre, Colden Center at Queens College) and Appelemando’s Dreams (The Vineyard Theatre, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Colden Center at Queens College) with composer James Kurtz, and Little Kit (Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, The Vineyard Theatre), The Butterfly, Jose Limon: The Making of an Artist and Sky Boys with composer Charles Greenberg. She has also written Beautiful Warrior (Jin Xiang, composer), the book and additional lyrics for The Upside Down Boy (Lyrics by Juan Felipe Herrera and Music by Cristian Amigo) and the book for The Orphan Singer (featuring the music of Antonio Vivaldi, music selection and arrangement by Rick Erickson), all for Making Books Sing. Ms Krieger is currently librettist for Clara: The Life and Loves of Clara Schumann, a two-act adult opera, music composed by Victoria Bond. Ms. Krieger is a recipient of the Opera America Distinguished Service Award. She holds a BFA in Theatre from Columbia University School of the Arts, and an MA in Speech and Theatre from Teachers College, Columbia University.

    Prior to joining Making Books Sing, Andrew was the Director of the Cultural Institutions Unit at the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Andrew Frank's background in theatre includes work as a producer, writer and director. Most recently, he was Associate Producer for Lombardi on Broadway. His writing and directing work has been seen at numerous theaters in New York and regionally, including Dodger Stages, The Duke Theatre on 42nd St, The Berkshire Theatre Festival and Glimmerglass Opera. Andrew's writing credits include the historical musical revue The Greenwich Village Follies, the musical Sidd based on the Hermann Hesse novel, and two highly acclaimed dance/theatre pieces Isadora . . . No Apologies and In Search of a Goddess. Andrew is the Founding Artistic Director of Manhattan Theatre Source and an alumni of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop.

    Brooke began her relationship with Making Books Sing in 2005 when she worked as a teaching artist. A professional actor, Brooke has performed in Micronesia, Asia, Indonesia and Europe. For the past ten years, she has worked in both theatre and film in New York City while also attending two graduate programs. She holds an MFA in Acting from the Actors Studio Drama School (New School University), as well as an MA in Educational Theatre from New York University. Brooke received her undergraduate degree in Creative Writing and Theatre from Northern Michigan University. Her background in the arts is deeply rooted in a passion for contemporary and experimental theatre. While attending NYU, Brooke studied the philosophies of Anne Bogart, Tadashi Suzuki, Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal. Their techniques and theories greatly influenced Brooke's educational pedagogy. Before returning to Making Books Sing in 2007, Brooke worked as a playwriting and theatre teaching artist at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ.

    Julie recently joined Making Books Sing in the Fall of 2011. She has worked in both non-profit and commercial theatre companies in development, marketing and management including Lincoln Center Festival, The Pearl Theatre Company, Soho Rep, Prospect Theater Company, Richard Frankel Productions, MTWorks, 321 Theatrical Management, Nederlander Worldwide, New York City Center, Ma-Yi Theater Company, New York Musical Festival, Target Margin Theater Company, Prospect Theater Company, New Professional Theater, Red Bull Theater Company, The Gallery Players, The Cell Theatre Company, The Production Company, The Public Theater, Working Theater, InterAct Annex, Ateh Theatre Company and Abingdon Theatre Company. She holds a BA in Theater and Creative Writing from The George Washington University. Currently, she is working on her MFA in Performing Arts Management at Brooklyn College and expects to graduate in the Spring of 2012.

    Emma has happily worn many hats at Making Books Sing since 2009. During that time she’s been involved in the artistic development of Tea with Chachaji, The Storyteller’s Candle and Sky Boys, as well as managed the company’s successful $50,000 Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the anti-bullying play Alice’s Story. Emma has worked in various capacities on a variety of theater projects in New Brunswick, NJ and New York City, and has held positions at Florida Studio Theatre, Samuel French Publishing, New Dramatists and Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, among others. She holds a BA in English from Rutgers University and an MFA in Dramaturgy from Brooklyn College.

    Jenny began working with MBS as a teaching artist for the SAFE (Shelters, Arts, Families, Education) program during the Summer of 2008 right after graduating from Vassar College. Jenny’s senior thesis at Vassar was a project in which she wrote and recorded an album of children’s songs for children and an album of children’s songs for adults. Jenny is a certified Teacher in Childhood Education and is currently pursuing her MS in Special Education at Hunter College.

    Kimberly joined Making Books Sing’s staff in 2006. A native New Yorker, Kimberly has worked in the non-profit sector at Studio Museum in Harlem, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Jericho Project and The Doe Fund. In addition to her professional experience, Kimberly has raised funds through her philanthropy efforts for the following NYC-based organizations: Project Enterprise, The Point CDC, Lower East Side Girls Club, CityKids Foundation and The Door. For these efforts, Kimberly earned Trace Magazine’s “2007 Black Girls that Rock” title. A graduate of Fashion Institute of Technology, Kimberly has also attended Brooklyn College and Parsons School of Design. Kimberly is a proud wife and mother of one.

    Sara grew up acting and working as a teaching artist in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from Syracuse University with a BFA in Acting and a Minor in Education Studies. While at Syracuse University, she lived abroad in London and trained as an actor at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Sara spent the last year working in the Education department at Asolo Repertory Theatre. She is currently pursuing her MA in Applied Theatre at the City University of New York, while working as the Education Administrator here at Making Books Sing. She is very passionate about exploring the arts with populations as a community-building tool.

    Josh loves Making Books Sing. Josh’s TYA directing credits include The Wizard of Oz (Forestburgh Playhouse), Freddy the Flat-Faced School Bus (Theatre Building Chicago), All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten (Eudamonia Theatre), and Charlotte’s Web (Evanston Children’s Theatre). Josh was Founder and Artistic Director of Apex Theatre Company in Chicago, and is also certified as a technical trainer and by Apple as a film editor.     Jen is the Business Manager for Making Books Sing and also serves as the Executive Director/Co-Founder of Railroad Playhouse, a new non-profit performance venue in Newburgh, NY. She has worked as the Finance Director of the Jose Limon Dance Foundation, the Assistant General Manager at Classic Stage Company, the Chief Operating Officer at Off Broadway Booking and the Production Manager of the Vittum Theater in Chicago. Jen holds a BFA in Theatre Technology from DePaul University in Chicago, and an MFA in Arts Management from Brooklyn College.

  • MAX ARNAUD

    Max Arnaud is an actor, writer, director and teacher. He studied at Tulane University (BA) and West Virginia University’s College of Creative Arts (MFA). He teaches for Making Books Sing, PS 87 Afterschool, Young Playwrights and formerly at Multicultural Music Group’s Integrated Arts Project. He directs plays for young people at the Brooklyn Players Summer program as well as full-length productions for adults at of Brooklyn Players Community Musical Theater. At the college level, he taught introductory and first-year acting at West Virginia University. At Greenbrier Valley Theatre he led student playwriting workshops culminating in fully produced showcases of new work. As an actor, he has performed in over 50 plays. Recently, Max played a leading role in Upstate, an independent feature film by Ground Glass Productions (LA Film Festival 2010.) His play Daydream toured the Canadian Fringe Festival circuit in the Summer of 2010.

  • FLOR BROMLEY

    Flor Bromley is an actress, director, singer and storyteller from Lima, Peru. She is a Musical Theatre graduate from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) and holds a BA in Education. She is a proud company member of the bilingual children’s theatre company Teatro SEA and a teaching artist for the Creative Arts Team at CUNY, Making Books Sing and Bilingual Birdies. She is currently touring colleges with the best- selling play Yo Soy Latina across the nation and she just finished a NYC library tour with Urban Stages of South of the Border: Latin-American Folktales. In December she will be touring NYC Zoos with the eco-friendly children’s play If You Really Love Polar Bears... by Making Books Sing. Favorite theatre roles include: Pitti Sing (The Mikado), Pura Belpre (The Storyteller’s Candle), Beba (La Noche de los Asesinos). TV: “Necesito una amiga” (Univision) and “Law and Order” (NBC Universal).

  • RIA COOPER

    Ria Cooper is a Brooklyn-based teaching artist who uses theatre and yoga as tools to educate and build community. Ria has worked both domestically and internationally, most recently in places as varied as the five boroughs of New York City, New Orleans and Rwanda. She received her children's yoga teaching certification from Karma Kids Yoga in New York. She holds an MA in Applied Theatre from the CUNY School of Professional Studies, a certificate from the National Theatre Institute, and a BA in Theatre and Dance from Oberlin College. Ria teaches yoga, theatre and arts & crafts to young people in New York City.

  • DANIELLE DEFASSIO

    Danielle Defassio is starting her first year as a teaching artist with Making Books Sing. She is a new face to the NYC acting scene and is quickly earning credits. Most recently she was Mama Bear in The Berenstain Bears Live! and is happy to be reprising her role as Polar Bear with MBS's original production If You Really Love Polar Bears... this December. In addition to acting, Danielle loves to sing and makes appearances at local piano bars to croon. A CD is currently in the works. Danielle loves to travel and has lived in PA, Wisconsin, Chicago, New York and Germany.   • RACHEL EVANS
    Teaching Artist


    Rachel Evans is an actress, playwright and teaching artist. Her one woman show Jew Wish, which she wrote, produced and starred in, was part of the 2010 NY International Fringe Festival. Past Off-Broadway credits include: The Blue Bird (Urban Stages), and Macrune’s Guevara and Richard and Anne (Mirror Repertory Company). She holds a BA in Theater and English from Tufts University and is currently pursuing her Masters in Applied Theater at the CUNY School of Professional Studies. www.jewwishtheshow.com

  • ANNEKA FAGUNDES

    Anneka Fagundes is a teaching artist who loves using theatre to educate, build community and address social issues. She is beginning her second year as a teaching artist with Making Books Sing, and is co-creator of MBS’s anti-bullying interactive performance Alice’s Story. For the past six years, Anneka has worked with various arts-in-education organizations throughout the city and has also been involved in theatre-for-development projects in Rwanda and Guatemala. She holds a MA in Applied Theatre from CUNY School of Professional Studies, and a BA in Drama from Vassar College.

  • MELISSA GORDON
    Teaching Artist


    Melissa Gordon is an actor, writer, musician and comedian who is proud to call New York her home. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Drama from Ithaca College and has also studied at the National Theatre Institute, Upright Citizens Brigade, The Groundlings and Magnet Theater. Melissa has performed with the Manhattan Children's Theatre, Traveling Lantern Theatre Company and most recently worked with Making Books Sing in a production of If You Really Loved Polar Bears... at the Bronx Zoo. Melissa performs regularly at the Magnet Theater with her musical improv team Mint Condition and is also a member of the Story Pirates. Melissa feels very lucky and extremely proud to work and perform with so many wonderful people.

  • CHELSEA HACKETT

    Chelsea Hackett is an actress, playwright and teaching artist. She is a native of Reno, NV who has been living in NYC for the past year. She is currently pursuing an MA in Applied Theatre and a teaching certification at CUNY. She has worked as a teaching artist both in the US and abroad for over three years. She is excited and grateful to be a part of the Making Books Sing team!

  • JENNIFER HOUSEAL
    Teaching Artist


    Jennifer Houseal, a singer and theatre artist, has been an MBS Teaching Artist since 2004. She has also taught theatre to 1st through 6th graders in NYC public schools, after-school programs and summer camps for organizations such as Manhattan New Music Project, Oasis Children’s Services and the MoMA P.S. 1 Museum. Jennifer has performed in productions of original musicals in NYC, such as The Passion of George W. Bush and Fitz and Walloughs Get It in the End, and also completed Manhattan School of Music’s Professional Musical Theatre Workshop in 2006. In addition, Jennifer is a costumer who has worked on Off-Broadway musicals, such as Menopause, the Musical and SHOUT! The Mod Musical, and most recently designed the costumes for the Creative Arts Team Youth Theatre’s shows From Time to Time and The Power Game. Jennifer has a BA in Theatre Arts from Sarah Lawrence College and an MA in Applied Theatre from The CUNY School of Professional Studies.

  • T. SCOTT LILLY
    Teaching Artist


    T. Scott Lilly grew up in Brooklyn and lives there still. He is married to Sarah Germain Lilly and has two daughters. He attended Brooklyn College as music major and studied theater at HB studio, The Academy for Music and Dramatic Arts and The Neighborhood Playhouse. With his wife they founded Germainia, a children's theater and workshop, and have performed original shows and given workshops in NYC, primarily under the auspices of the NY Public Library and the Queens Public Library. As an actor, Scott has performed in many, many Off-Off Broadway productions, one Off-Broadway and six independent films. He is a member of Actor's Equity and the Screen Actor's Guild. Scott co-wrote and co-directed the musical Benny's Barbershop with Mark Marcante at Theater for the New City. He is a member of Wise Guise, a theater troupe that has performed at HERE, Theater for the New City,  PS122, The Duplex and Don't Tell Mama. Scott plays trumpet, guitar and piano and has written many songs, especially for children. Scott has been a teaching artist for ten years and enjoys his work tremendously.

  • KALLE MACRIDES

    Kalle Macrides absolutely loves working as a teaching artist with Making Books Sing. She has also taught with the Woman's Project Theater, Brooklyn Summer Players, Queens Cultural Partnership, Brooklyn College, Polytechnic Institute of New York University and was the Education Director for the Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation. Kalle holds an MA in Performance Studies from NYU and an MFA in Creative Writing from Mac Wellman’s playwriting program at Brooklyn College. Kalle is an actress, playwright and executive director of Adhesive Theater Project. She’s also a new mom!

  • SHELAH MARIE

    Shelah Marie is a performer, writer and Arts Educator from Hollywood, Florida. Shelah studied theater and performance at Florida State University, where she received dual BA degrees in Theater and Mass Media Studies. She recently earned her MA degree in Performance Studies from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. She loves homemade popcorn, documentaries and reading children's original stories. Currently, Shelah is in Brooklyn teaching, performing, changing the world and trying to put one foot in front of the other.www.ShelahMarie.com for more info.

  • TARYN MATUSIK

    Taryn Matusik grew up near the foothills of the Adirondacks, but has called NYC home for nearly two decades. She holds a BA from The University of Georgia in Art History, a dual MA from The City College of New York and an MPhil from Columbia University. On a PhD track, Taryn instead followed her inner compass to Circle in the Square Theater School’s two year professional program, although she continues to give talks at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Taryn trained as a teaching artist through an apprenticeship with Daniel Sklar. This training, along with her experience teaching undergraduates at Columbia University, set her on the path of Aesthetic Education and employment by Lincoln Center Institute in 2006. Since then, Taryn has ventured into schools and worked with educators on behalf of Making Books Sing, Theater Development Fund, Women’s Project, Creative Arts Education, as well as LCI. Taryn is deeply passionate about her work with students and, as an avid reader herself, is thrilled to be able to offer her abilities, training and spirit to Making Books Sing. As an actor, Taryn has performed in theater, film and TV in the NYC area, as well as regionally. With several writing projects underway, Taryn’s current focus is on producing a recently completed script for a short film about subjectivity.

  • GARRY NOVIKOFF
    Teaching Artist


    Garry Novikoff is a Bronx-born singer/songwriter whose talent spans many genres. He is the 2011 recipient of the ASCAP Foundation’s Joe Raposo Award for Children’s Music. “Melody,” the winning song, is part of a larger song-based curriculum he is developing for grade-school music education. “Dog on the Moon,” Garry’s first recording, produced in part by the National Space Society, was played on radio stations across the country, featured on Canada’s Discovery Channel, and performed in both MAC/ASCAP and Songwriters Hall of Fame showcases. Time Out New York called his 2009 CD A Normal Life “a catchy – and more importantly, funny – collection of pop songs.” In 2010 the Duplex Theater mounted “Take A Number: The Songs of Garry Novikoff,” leading to a MAC nomination for his song “We Are The Meek.” His songs have been covered by cabaret singers and punk bands alike. Garry has received grants from the Anna Sosenko Assist Trust and Great Performances, as well as numerous ASCAP Plus Awards. Garry is currently working on Rock Soup, his first children’s musical.

  • LIZ PARKER
    Teaching Artist


    Liz Parker is a passionate performer, director and educator. Her work has been used to address social issues including school violence, depression, child abuse and trauma. Liz has performed regularly in all five boroughs of New York City over the past ten years and has also performed in theaters across the United States while on tour with two productions for young audiences. She loves creating new work as evidenced in her one-woman show Mr. Morning Mends His Mind, as well as more recent co-created works including a children’s piece, Blown Away By Poetry. Liz holds a master’s degree in Applied Theatre from the City University of New York. She especially enjoys working with puppets, stilts and kazoos.

  • LAURA POE
    Teaching Artist


    Laura Poe has been creating make-believe worlds with kids since she was old enough to babysit her little sister. She started her journey into storytelling as an actress, appearing in plays, commercials and movies and then began creating her own stories by writing and producing plays, short films and a one-woman show that traveled to six cities. Comedy improv is one of her favorite pastimes where she can create crazy characters and discover new games to share with kids.
